The Mongolian gown is the favorite gown of the Mongolians and the formal attires for important festivals and ceremonious occasions. Wearing gowns is solemn and it is particular about many things, such as do not role up the sleeves when holding tea and toasting, do not shield the chest, and do not sweep kitchenware with the lap. “Gowns have collars, just as people have brothers”, they pay special attention to the collar which can not span. For storage, the gowns should be placed beside trousers, front of the collar should be upward and the collar should point at northwest, do not point at the door. When kowtowing to Buddha, do not roll out the front.

In the past, herdsmen of the steppe wore gowns all over the year.

Gowns of summer are mostly made of cotton cloth or silk. The bright and colorful gowns together with beautiful headwear and belt make the young girls and men beautiful and attractive, more charming than the flowers blooming on the steppe.

Collar of the gown is high and sleeves are long to protect the neck and wrists from being bitten by mosquitoes; the gown is wide and loose, small inside and large outside, and the lap has no seams, which enable people to move flexibly on the horses, as well as to protect the knees from chill.

The broad silk belt is tied on the waist, which shows the solemnity and dressing. Belt of men is relatively lower, and the blouse drags out from the belt to show the strong and brave manner; and belt of women is relatively higher, and the blouse wrapped the waist and chest tightly to show the curve of body and valiant manner. When they are riding, the wind blows and the gowns flying, just like the dimly discernible trace.

The dainty gowns are all made by skilled women. The gowns fit, with matched colors, embroidered collar, ribbon edge, beautiful and gorgeous. When wearing the clothes, the whole body will be splendid.

Gowns of winter are made of leather. The Mongolian craftsmen use supreme sheep skin with long hair to make gowns by fermentation and shoveling. They make the sheep skins to be white and soft. Shake the leather, and the hair feels like cotton. The gowns made of such leather are light and warm. In cold winter, snowy weather, and blowing wind, the broad steppe is cold. The Mongolian herdsmen wear the light and warm gowns to ride, sit on the ground, hide in grotto, or spend the night in brushwood. They rely on the gowns to cover their bodies, and the gowns can warm them up and protect them from diseases.

The Mongolian herdsmen of ancient times usually lived on the back of horses. They migrated with the water and grass frequently without fixed residences. In night, they always slept with clothes on. A gown can be tick as well as quilt. Even those herdsmen who had a yurt slept on the lele cart, curling up the body and covering the head and foot, the gowns can be a sleeping bag as well as a mosquito net.

Now, however, life of the steppe has changed greatly. The herdsmen have had inhabited place and their living habits have changed a lot. Suit, jacket, down wear, jeans wear, radish trousers, and ski jacket have entered every family, and especially popular among young Mongolians.

However, the gowns are the authentic Mongolian cultural heritage after all and have followed them fore hundreds of years, and they also like the gowns very much. Although most of the Mongolians do not wear gowns at ordinary times now, they wear the colorful national costumes on happy and solemn occasions such as festival, gathering, ceremony, and worshipping. Especially on the art stage of showing the happy and nice new life of the Mongolian nationality, the motley performance costumes are still the world of the Mongolian gowns, because the Mongolian gowns have become the symbol of national awareness and notion in the minds of the Mongolians.
